Prospective Exhibition Community Team Member Application Information

Heights Arts, located just down the street from Cleveland Heights High School, is accepting applications from rising Juniors at HHS to serve on its Exhibition Community Team (ECT). This is an opportunity for students to experience a “behind-the-scenes” look into the process of producing an art exhibition. They will gain valuable skills in leadership while obtaining hands-on experience in every aspect of a successful visual art exhibition. As the junior intern, they will assist the senior intern in planning and implementing the annual student art exhibition.

Applicants interested in serving on the Heights Arts ECT should first read and understand the objectives and requirements of the committee.

The Heights Arts ECT is a group of volunteer artists and arts professionals who collectively oversee the Heights Arts exhibition program. The objective of the community team is to present high-quality, significant exhibitions in the Heights Arts exhibition spaces, presenting diverse media and a good cross-section of established and emerging artists of our northeast Ohio region.

The committee’s essential duties are:

• Meet bi-monthly to review submitted work and plan future exhibitions. Meetings take place on Thursdays at 6pm in the Heights Arts gallery. Dates for the 2024-25 school year are: August 8 / October 10 / December 12 / February 13 / April 10 / June 12. Committee members are required to attend all meetings. On rare occasions meetings may need to be rescheduled due to events at Heights Arts or other conflicts.

• Review submitted work (through online applications) ahead of community team meetings. This process is critical to determining future exhibitions. Committee members should be thoughtful in their consideration, and be able to articulate critically why they do or do not find work suitable for the gallery.

• Install all gallery exhibitions. Heights Arts shows open on a Friday and close on Sunday. Exhibition installation takes place the Tuesday after the last show has closed. Installation dates for the 2024-25 school year are: August 13 / October 22 / January 7 / March 11 / May 23 / June 10.

• Attend artist studio visits as needed to evaluate work.

• Attend exhibition openings. While not required, it is advised that committee members try to attend at least some group and Spotlight receptions. Exhibition opening dates for the 2024-25 school year are: August 16 / November 1 / January 10 / March 14 / May 15 / June 13.

• Abide by the community team rules of decorum:
o No criticizing of fellow community team members or their opinions in or out of the boardroom.
o Respectful criticism of the art discussed.
o No use of the organization for personal advantage or that of friends or relatives.

Successful candidates are able to:

• Attend all committee meetings and exhibition installations (extenuating circumstances notwithstanding).
• Attend some exhibition openings and other Heights Arts programs.
• Work as a part of a cohesive team with common goals.
• Participate actively and feel comfortable sharing his/her/their skills and expertise.
• Respect and support the majority decisions of the committee.
• Come to all meetings prepared and ready to contribute.
• Proactively communicate with the committee chair if any schedule conflicts arise.
• Familiarize themselves with the organization and articulate a general understanding of its mission, history, and community.
• Serve as an ambassador of Heights Arts.
• Plan, curate and execute a student exhibition in August of each year drawing from experience, resources and personal experience from serving on the Exhibition Community Team.

The Heights Arts Exhibition Community Team position reserved for a high school student comes with a $250 stipend, with half distributed mid-year and the balance at end of term.

APPLICATION:

Students may apply online at HERE from February 1, 2024 through February 29, 2024 to be considered for the 2024-2025 internship.
