David C. Hart presents an illustrated lecture on
Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons
Multimedia artist Maria-Magdalena Campos-Pons was
born in Cuba in 1959, the
year of the Revolution, and immigrated to the United
States in 1990. Unable
to return to her homeland, her work during the past
decade became a vehicle
to explore her identity as a Cuban woman of African
ancestry, addressing
memory, dislocation, race, gender, and family. In a
series of three
installations created in the 1990s titled The History
of People Who Were
Not Heroes Campos-Pons combined photography,
sculpture, video and
performance in tributes to her ancestors, the slaves
and laborers who worked
on sugar plantations and as domestics in Cuba.
David C. Hart is Assistant Professor of Art History at
Cleveland Institute
of Art. He has taught at Wake Forest University and at
the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill, from which he will receive
a Ph.D. in art
history in 2004. In 2003 he wrote the catalog for and
curated the
exhibition Inside/Outside: Contemporary Cuban
Art at the Charlotte and
Philip Hanes Art Gallery at Wake Forest University.

The 23rd Annual Roxboro Arts Festival presented by
REAP will be held on
Saturday May 15th from 10:00 to 4:00. Artists are
invited to exhibit and sell their work. The
registration fee is $20. We ask that no more than two

This intimate two-person
romantic musical charts the journey of Jamie (Scott
Plate), a young Jewish
novelist making his way from unknown student to best-
selling author; and
Cathy (Sandy Simon), an aspiring theatre star
who moves from the Midwest to
Manhattan to make it big. The acclaimed 2002 off-
Broadway show, humorously
exploring the modern relationship, is making its first
Ohio appearance at
Dobama.
