    Heights Center Building Mural

Cleveland Heights artist Jesse Rhinehart (above) installed the Heights Center Building mural on July 24, 2004 on the Lennox Road side of the building at Cedar Road, Cleveland Heights.

The mural was commissioned by HeightsArts for Michael Occhionero, owner of the Cleveland Heights landmark building. The location was selected because the wide sidewalk in front of the wall is a place where people often sit. But although there were benches and tables, the area felt like a place to pass through rather than a destination.

Rhinehart studied archival photos and history provided by Kara Hamley O'Donnell, historic preservationist for the City of Cleveland Heights, and has created a trompe l'oeil mural of a historical storefront. The painting, created in his studio, depicts both the inside of stores from long ago as well as reflections in the storefront windows. The mural is painted with special outdoor mural paints and coated with a clear ultraviolet-absorbing film.

Thank you to all of our generous supporters who made this possible !

    Coventry Fences installed

HeightsArts connected the Cov entry Village Special Improvement District with Kent artist Brinsley Tyrrell to use federal transportation funds earmarked for generic fences around tree islands into an artistic product. Read about it in Dan Tranberg's column in the Plain Dealer.

Look for pictures in our next newsletter, or visit Coventry and see them for yourself. The first six fences have been installed in Tommy's block, and Tyrrell will be on the street Monday, July 26, to install an additional six fences (weather permitting).

    Roundup Roundup

We've been talking to you about the Roundup for the Arts for several weeks now, and just want to let you know that it was a great evening of good Heights food, drink, dancing, and dunking at the Kious homestead.

Thank you to our hosts, Jan and Gus Kious, as well as the tireless committee headed by Board President Sharon Grossman. We're grateful to the restaurants who donated food; artists and businesses who donated to the silent auction; Hillbilly Idol and Becky Hill who provided the foot-stompin' music; and to the 200 guests who came to celebrate and support the arts in the community.

Special thanks to Mayor Ed Kelley and councilpersons Dennis Wilcox and Ken Montlack, who presented HeightsArts with a check for $25,000 for Sculpture in the Heights. This contribution was made possible through the generosity of Canyon Johnson, the former owners of Severance Town Center.

Sculpture in the Heights is an outdoor exhibition slated to be installed around the ring road at Severance Town Center in spring, 2005. A call for entries will be mailed to Ohio sculptors in September.

The exhibition is also supported by The Coral Company and The Ohio Arts Council.

Phoenix Coffee and the Cleveland Shakespeare Festival present an evening of Shakespeare, coffee, desserts and wine to benefit Cleveland's only free, outdoor Shakespearean company.

ACT l: Directed by CSF Education Director Jacqi Loewy. Members of the CSF's Intern Company, the Sonnet Bonnets will be roaming the room performing Shakespeare sonnets and a 3-minute version of Romeo & Juliet. The kids will love interacting with the Sonnet Bonnets!

ACT ll: Robert Does Titus (& Everybody else!) Robert Hawkes, noted Cleveland actor and CSF company member, performs his one man interpretation of Titus Andronicus. Titus is a tragedy; but with Robert playing all the roles, if it isn't quite comedy it promises to be highly amusing, to say the least. And it's clearly the ultimate in actorly multi- tasking!

So come join us as you sip rich, smooth French Press coffee, savor beautiful & tasty desserts created by pastry chef Ron Seballos, and enjoy fine wines selected by friends of the Bard while you watch the show.

FOR RESERVATIONS: Make checks payable to Cleveland Shakespeare Festival and mail it or drop off at:

    A few volunteers needed

HeightsArts needs occasional or regular volunteers to staff the gallery at 2173 Lee Road. If you enjoy meeting people and spending time with art, please call HeightsArts Program Coordinator Elisa Meadows at 371-3344.
Some of our evening volunteers bring a friend, and go out for dinner first, or a movie afterwards. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday noon to 10 pm, and Sundays 1-5. We are particularly looking for volunteers for some evenings, and for a couple of hours on Saturday afternoons.
