Arts, culture, and entertainment in the Heights and beyond

In the Heights, the woman who cuts your hair could be a dancer (Zoe at Salon DM) or the research librarian a poet (Ben Gulyas at Heights Main Library). Recently, a library staff day opened with the following poem-(prompting a discussion at HeightsArts about annually appointing a Heights Poet Laureate):

"Invocation to the Great Collector: or an Ode to the Briar Patch"

Here we are-a Friday morning in October-
here we are, hoped up, strapped in,
wading through a fog of "what happened to sleep?"
our crumpled socks, our hard toast, our bath water overcrowded with ducks-
here we are spiraling in eternity,
a pin prick of Democracy,
peach cobbler & herring bone-
a dreamer's mind envisioned in libraries,
pulled from sleep
to "wake up" "wake up!"
the bee keeper's daughter
rasping a morning's call
to welcome out the barn
the lamb, the goat, the mule,
the cow, the horse,
the crow-
walking Spanish under light poles, down the sun, under the rain-
pulled from sleep into an equinox of coffee and tired shoes-

Here we are staggered and determined,
like sweet Mrs. Cline, the original librarian of my childhood, who lived forever
with all the world and us,
the image, the feeling
of holding a book in the hand,
wood smoke and cookies-
- plotting invocations to the Great Collector, the library
of our treasures - like the spike of the heart
in uncharted waters-
and with a blink of the eye, out into the morning,
Ahab and Jonah,
stroll from the bar(n)
return to pay their overdues
and criss-cross a few phone numbers for hens' teeth-
and it all
makes sense--

miles to the point,
years to right now,
one earshot
to the fox- (and us? mere Brer Rabbits? )
"Aha!!
Don't throw us in the briar patch!
Don't throw us in the briar patch!"
and we are in it now--

a Friday morning in this October world-
so let's begin.
