HeightsArts First Annual Patron Print
Ellipsis
a print by Wendy Collin Sorin

This print was commissioned by Heights Arts as the first in an annual series of editions. All proceeds from the sale of the print benefit HeightsArts gallery through the generosity of the artist.

Ellipsis is a 2-color waterless lithograph, limited to an edition of 50. It was printed by the artist at Zygote Press.

Like much of Wendy Collin Sorin's work, it explores overlain text and graphic form. The first view of the print is of graphic symbol, of an energy field. In the background is handwriting, which appears as texture, as a ground, rather than language. The text is from a found letter, which the artist has edited, and added her own marks. By omitting parts of the letter, the artist makes it less specific, less telling. With bright color and design, it is not easy to read, either. Ellipses presents us with a figure of the imagination, revealing a type of space in which we create art out of life~William Busta

Poet Laureate Search for Cleveland Heights
Robert Pinsky is not eligible
HeightsArts announces a search for a Poet Laureate for Cleveland Heights, Ohio. The Laureate will be appointed annually during April, National Poetry Month. The principal official duty of the Laureate will be to write and present poems for 12 public events during the term of office - about once a month. The Laureate will receive an honorarium of $1000, which is possible through the generosity of private donations led by a generous personal contribution from Mayor Ed Kelley.

The project arose from a poetic presence in our unique artistic community. An Advisory Committee established a process and criteria for the project and invited a number of distinguished people to be on the Selection Panel (see below). The Poet Laureate Advisory Committee is comprised of Bunny Breslin, William Busta, Mark Genszler, Tom Gibson, Ben Gulyas, Kelly Harris, Mark Kmetzko, Nancy Levin, and Carole Wallencheck, chair.

Requirements:
The Poet Laureate must have lived and/or worked in Cleveland Heights for the last year and be at least 18 years of age.
The Selection Panel will nominate the Laureate based on the quality of the poet's work; the suitability of the poet's work for civic celebration or meditation; and the capability of the poet to present poetry orally in public.

Application Process:
· Completed Application Form (call 371-3344 for locations to be picked up)
· One-paragraph vision statement for your service as Poet Laureate
· At least 3 and no more than 5 poems submitted in any format - written, audio, or video.

Application materials due by 5 p.m. March 4, 2005.
Materials can be mailed to:
HeightsArts, 2163 Lee Road #104, Cleveland Heights, Ohio 44118
or delivered to
HeightsArts gallery, 2173 Lee Road, Wednesday thru Saturday noon to 10 pm and Sunday 1-5
Judging will be during the month of March, and will take place in two parts:
Review of submitted materials and selection of finalists.
Finalists will be invited to meet with the panel to present their work orally and to talk about their poetic practice.

The first Poet Laureate of Cleveland Heights will be announced at the Cleveland Heights City Council Meeting on Monday, April 4, 2005

Selection Panel:
Cavana Faithwalker, Assistant Director of Community Outreach, Cleveland Museum of Art
Suzanne DeGaetano, Owner, Mac's Backs bookstore, Cleveland Heights
