The Heights, Naturally
A Lee Road Community Mural Project
sponsored by The Nature
Center at Shaker Lakes,
Cleveland
Heights-University Heights Public Library
and HeightsArts
We're collaborating to create a series of painted
panels to cover the chain-link fences on Lee Road
around the Library construction
Project Overview:
When nature intersects with people there is an
opportunity for inspiration and renewal. The Lee
Road
Community Mural will beautify an urban
environment
through a tapestry of images on panels designed and
painted by local artists, kids and community
organizations. Stretching across the block-long
construction site for the new CH-UH main library, the
imagery will be visually connected through the
theme -- The Heights, Naturally: images
inspired by
the natural world around us, encouraging
passersby
to enjoy a moment of beauty and reflection and to
consider the rich natural and cultural diversity and
strong community that makes The Heights such a
vibrant place.
How to Participate:
Organizations or groups are invited to adopt,
design
and paint panels. Panel designs may include
images
of personal significance, etc., but must somehow
connect to the larger theme of local nature as muse,
(perhaps considering local flora and fauna, geology,
seasonal changes, etc. as creative springboards to
work from) Imagery may be couched within any
artistic style. Invited individual artists can choose
whether they prefer to paint their panel individually
or include it as a community painting day panel.
Designs which will be painted by community members
must be clear and simple. All panels will have a
standard 3" border design, although artists may
choose the colors used in their panel's two-color
border if desired. If you need thematic or artistic
consultation, Nature Center staff are available for
both - contact Crystal Birns 216 321-5935 x237
or
birns@shakerlakes.org for more info.
Interested groups may also choose to simply
adopt
and paint a panel, and allow a local artist to
create a
design for them. Regardless, participating
organizations must pay $20 per panel and are
responsible for recruiting at least two and no more
than 30 volunteers ages 10 and older to help with
the painting process (see important community
painting dates below).
Fee:
$20 per panel for organizations
Free for individual artists
This fee provides for a primed 4'x4' panel,
latex paints, and brushes, (although participants are
encouraged to supplement with their own
weatherproof paints and brushes) and refreshments
on the community painting days).
Individuals or groups who wish to design and
paint a
panel:
Friday, July 15 Registration Deadline:
registration forms must be turned in to
Samantha Fryberger by 5pm.
Thursday, July 28 Design Deadline: Final
designs must be submitted as a 12" x 12" or 18" x
18" black- and-white or color image by or before
5pm. (Color designs are preferable if possible, so that
community volunteers will have some color direction
on the community painting days)
Sunday, August 7 - Friday, August 12
various times. Panel Prep (applying a
basecoat,
scanning, projecting and outlining designs onto
panels):
Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August
21 Community Painting Dates10am to 5pm, at
the Nature Center Pavilion.
Sunday, August 28, 3pm - 6pm. Installation
Date
Individuals or groups who wish to adopt and
paint, but not design, a

at 216 932 3600 x77250 or email
sfryberg@heightslibrary.org to sign your
organization's volunteers up for a work session at the
Nature Center during the scheduled community
