HeightsArts Volunteer Appreciation
More than 60 volunteers have logged more than
800
hours in HeightsArts gallery this year, and we
thanked them at a Volunteer Appreciation party
hosted by Board President Sharon Grossman and her
husband Pat Crago last month. The Volunteer of
the
Year award went to regular Friday afternoon
volunteers Marilyn and Dick Meadows, who
have
collectively logged more than 100 hours. As with
most Heights residents, if you scratch the surface
there are even deeper arts connections: Dick
directed plays at Cain Park, Jewish Community
Center, Theatre in the Valley, Church of the Saviour
and Tri-C over a span of 40-some years. Marilyn, a
pianist, is President of Arts in
the Cathedral at
Church of the Saviour.
The event featured a reading by Cleveland Heights
Poet Laureate Meredith Holmes, which included the
following:
How Fortunate I Am
To sit between you
on this fallen tree, all three of us
in an early September trance,
you on my right, speaking so slowly
and in such wide, rumbling
circles, that i set out
on several voyages, return,
and leave again before
you finish one sentence.
And you on my left, dart,
quick-eyed as an antelope,
through the tall, undulating
grasses of our talk.
I am content to sit
and listen: beginning,
middle, and end;
all one conversation
and we're all in it.
Meredith Holmes / June 2004
HeightsArts
would not exist without the support of
our creative residents. Please call
us if you are interested in volunteering at the
gallery. 216.371.3344

Moving on
In 2002, HeightsArts and
curator/gallery director William Busta came upon a
wonderful opportunity to create a community
contemporary art gallery in the heart of the Lee Road
commercial district. Beginning with an improvised
holiday store in 2002, we have spent these last three
years building something special in the Heights Arts
gallery. Now, with the gallery well established and
other projects beckoning, Busta has decided to step
back from the day-to-day operation of the gallery in
September in order to devote more time to
independent curatorial projects. He looks forward to
organizing shows at HeightsArts in that capacity for
years to come. "For me, for the organization, and for
the community, it was clearly the right time for
Heights Arts. This has been an immensely rewarding
experience and I feel very proud of what we have
accomplished. I know the gallery will continue to
bring exciting contemporary art to Cleveland Heights,
and I know the community will continue to support
the gallery. I thank everyone who has supported this
endeavor."
