Kalliope presents the area premiere of a musical guaranteed to enchant all ages. The musical is based on the true-life childhood diary of Opal Whitely. Lost at sea, Opal came to live with a lumberman’s wife in the woods of turn-of-the- century Oregon. Was she born a princess, as she believed? One thing is certain—she changed forever the lives of everyone she touched.

Cleveland Heights Poet Laureate appearances
Meredith Holmes will appear at two events this coming weekend:

Word Crafter’s Festival
Saturday, November 19
Cleveland Public Library, Louis Stokes Wing
East 6th and Superior
10 a.m-5 p.m.
216.421.0403

Among the man y events: Poetry reading and panel, moderated by Meredith Holmes:
11 a.m.: The Lay of the Land: Poetry of Place. How well do we understand the geography of home? Where is the highest ground? Where is the nearest stream, and where is its source? Two or three generations ago, such knowledge was common -- and essential. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, we see the catastrophic results of ignoring the lay of the land. Four Cleveland- area poets will explore the geography -- natural, social, and emotional -- of home.

Tellabration! originated in 1988 by J.G. Pinkerton in Connecticut as a means of building community support for storytelling. Today the simple event spans the globe with storytelling sessions in schools, museums, performing arts centers, libraries and other locations worldwide with hundreds of weavers spinning stories for thousands of people. The program was brought to the Heights by HeightsArts Trustee Carole Wallencheck, a Heights Library System associate.

Everyone is invited to enjoy light refreshments and a free afternoon of enchanting narratives of everyday life and magical happenings. This year’s theme, “Old & New,” incorporates a rich variety of cultures and traditions from Greater Cleveland’s diverse community.

“Although some adults may not think about storytelling, as a group, grownups seem to be as excited by the prospect of good story as children are,” notes Carole. “From larger than life tales told around the proverbial water cooler to the incredibly successful Lord of the Rings trilogy, there’s a hunger there.”

Meredith Holmes will be performing a narrative poem that she is composing for the occasion.

Interested? Commitment is minimal. Drop in to hear one story or stay all afternoon. Refreshments provided by HeightsArts.
