Few areas of Northeast Ohio are better known than Cleveland Heights’ own Coventry Village. Much of that notoriety is derived from its rich history: from Coventry’s birth as one of our city’s first commercial districts; through its emergence as an ethnic and counterculture epicenter; right up to its present incarnation as a vibrant retail and entertainment district. And witness to it all was the original Coventry School, the venerable, architectural masterpiece at the corner of Washington and Euclid Heights from 1922 until its regrettable demolition and replacement in 1975.

Join us for a two-part look at Coventry’s past:
Kara Hamley O’Donnell, Cleveland Heights’ Historic Preservation Planner, will take attendees on a historic trip through the Coventry Village business district’s history and architecture.
Chris Roy, president of the Cleveland Heights Historical Society and Coventry School alumnus (1958-1965) will present a memoir of the original Coventry School, including oral history reminiscences and rarely seen photographs.

Artist Talk and Demonstration

Many visitors to Open Spaces at Heights Arts at the Library have asked, What is the scratchboard technique used by the artist ? Artist Cathie Bleck of Cleveland Heights works in scratchboard; a medium that is made up of clay on board where ink and liquid clay pigments are layered on the board and then scratched away with engraving (or similar) tools. Bleck will give a talk and demonstration on this process, including the mixing of her liquid clay pigments, her influences and new foray into large-scale works in what is more commonly a small and intimate medium. Bleck will also sign copies of her new book, "Open Spaces", which is available from Heights Arts
