In print graphics and permanent installations I
have been looking to provide a
framework for multiple readings. In my latest work I
have been paying attention to
what invites the viewer into the process of
signification, what is hidden has become
as valuable as what is revealed. My latest work does
not provide the framework for a
specific or singular reading and leans more toward
the ineffable than to literal
transparency, uses absence to make a place for
presence.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, Sheila Levrant de
Bretteville's star as a designer shined,
when as director of the 'Art Squad' at Abraham
Lincoln High School, she won the Alex
Steinweiss award among others. Since that time she
has been using her abilities to
highlight social issues through public art, graphic
design, and design education.
In her career, she works as an investigator,
researching into the community and it's
residents where her projects will reside. As such,
Sheila is able to produce
projects that are significant to all of their local
populations. It has been this
commitment to design and the creation of such
compelling work that has earned Sheila
numerous honors throughout her career, including the
AIGA Medal in 2004.
