Coventry
Coventry
Friends-

As you may already know, the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Board of Education has convened a Coventry Study Committee to make a recommendation to the Board as to the best use of the closed elementary school building.   Last November 12, Heights Arts presented the following statement to the Board:

Coventry Elementary School is located at one of the most important physical sites in all of Cleveland Heights - indeed, on the whole East Side of Cleveland.  Its bustle of activity has long anchored the south end of one of the region's best-known and most vibrant commercial districts, while providing a gracious gateway to the residential area to the south and east.  The school and its grounds have been a center not only of education, but of artistic expression, recreation, and community gathering.

Now that the school building is empty, we propose exploring a use of the property that will add the greatest possible value to the quality of life in Cleveland Heights.  Our town must make the most of this unique opportunity.

One idea that is percolating in the community is reimagining the school building as a center for the arts and nonprofits.  Heights Arts' strategic plan is in alignment with this idea:  Our dream is a "vibrant, multi-disciplinary arts center with galleries, theater, music, dance, community outreach activities, classes and more."  This center would be a wonderful cultural, educational and economic asset for the neighborhood, the community and, indeed, the region.  For our schools, it would be a unique and invaluable resource for arts education both during and beyond the school day.  These possibilities ought to be explored.

To that end, we ask that a special task force be convened - made up of representatives of key nonprofit organizations, schools, libraries, city government, businesses, and members of the arts community and the community at large - to explore all possible advantageous uses of the Coventry School building and site, aspiring toward the brightest possible future for this neighborhood and the Heights area.  There are many, many questions that need to be asked to explore feasibility, and many stakeholders who need to be invited to ask these questions.

The Board convened a committee, and I attended the first meeting on March 3.  We toured the building, then had reports by the Business Manager (who is also an architect) and CFO.  Aside from the committee, the meetings are open to the public and there were more than a dozen additional people there, plus the district's Lay  Finance Committee.

According to the agenda:  "After this meeting, committee members will use the background knowledge that they have obtained to begin thinking of and conferring with their constituencies about the potential future use of the property."

As a reader of this newsletter, you are our constituency so please consider me your representative in this process and send any comments, ideas, resources, etc. my way at pspaeth@heightsarts.org.

The next meeting, March 18, is entitled "Expert evaluation of property potential from various perspectives:  Architectural, Developer, and Municipal" so according to the faciliator, William Wendling, it will be more information put out to us rather than any brainstorming.

The subsequent meetings involve determining which ideas to investigate, refining them, and working towards consensus on recommendations to the Board by May 20.

Remember, all meetings are open to the public.  Call the Board at 216.371.7171 to find out the location of the next meeting if you are interested in attending.  I will report to you after each meeting.

Best,

Peggy Spaeth, Director
