Coventry School
|
Coventry Study Committee invites citizen input What are your ideas for Coventry School? May 13 at 6:30 p.m. Coventry School
Heights
Arts has proposed a nonprofit multi-tenant center for the arts,
education, families, and community to the Coventry Study
Committee.
The idea of a multidisciplinary arts center
has been at the core of our vision since we began in 2000. Extending
the arts in our community beyond the Cain Park summer season was
embedded in the Cleveland Heights Vision document in 2001. There are hundreds of models throughout the country, including The Beck Center for the Arts in Lakewood, Fitton Center, Goggleworks, Torpedo Factory.
Why not here?
Our
vision for programming includes but is not limited to the creation of a
300-seat flexible performance space shared with others, an
intergenerational community theater, classes in music, art, drama, and
dance, artist studios, and more. We've heard suggestions for a
wood workshop, photography darkroom, jewelry studio, glass studio.
Other interested partners are the Heights Parent Center, a vital family and community resource currently operating from Taylor School, and the Cleveland Music School Settlement,
which is interested in expanding its well-respected preschool.
We've sent a survey to many other organizations to ascertain their
interest.
Let us be clear that we do not yet know whether the
project is feasible. There is much to be studied in order to
create a business plan. One of the first things we are looking at
is whether the costs of a new roof, heating and cooling system, and
windows can be incorporated into transforming the building into an
energy-efficient green building, using geothermal and solar
energy. Initial up-front cost could defray operating costs going
forward.
There is lots of information about the 61,000 square-foot building here.
Check out the handouts from the meetings. Please read, think,
dream, talk to your neighbors, and come give your thoughts to the
committee on May 13. You can also email the whole committee at
coventrysiteinput@chuh.org or Heights Arts at
heightsarts@heightsarts.org.

| Heights.Arts.Radio |
We're launching Heights.Arts.Radio on WJCU 88.7 FM Fridays 6-6:30 beginning May 16!
Produced by Heights Arts Trustee John Panza of local noise pop band Humphry Clinker,
the show is a mélange of hyperlocal arts and culture. You'll hear
interviews with local artists, sample music performed by your neighbors
who may just happen to play for the Cleveland Orchestra, and discover
all of the arts and artists in your own backyard. Like this
newsletter, the show will also shine a light on lesser known gems of
artistic endeavors in the neighborhood.
Heights.Arts.Radio is a volunteer effort. Ideas and submissions are welcome! Please contact 216.371.3457 or heightsarts@heightsarts.org

Free fun family theater workshop!
|
Wednesday, May 21, 7-8:30 p.m. Community and Communication Free interactive workshop for families, teachers, individuals!
Heights Arts Studio 2340 Lee Road (west side of library bridge) Open to all but reservations required: 216.371.3457
Join theater artist Jean Howat Berry
for an evening of improvisation and scenework for students, parents and
teachers. Community and communication come from the same root: to
share. We will share theatre, language, music, poetry, masks, snacks
and the wonderful community that we make together, using drama
strategies, ideas, props and each other to create new skills and
experiences.
Dayton artist Berry has been selected for a May
residency with third graders at Fairfax Elementary School in Cleveland
Heights. A theater artist, she will focus on Community as a Form of Art through Language
and spend one period a day with each third grade class for the
month. Lauren Epstein's class will work on writing and
performing; Stacey Cohen's on movement, and Kelly Borally's on
mask-making. Ms. Berry will also interact with other
classes in the school through the classes of art teacher Joan Levin,
physical education teacher Ilene Nolish, and vocal instructor Tamar
Grey.
The Ohio Arts Council helped
fund this residency with state tax dollars to encourage educational
excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. Through Arts
Learning program residencies, professional artists are placed in
schools and other non-profit organizations for periods ranging from two
weeks to two years. The program support experiences that:
value the creative process; provide opportunities for in-depth
collaborative learning; honor the artist's work, vision and
traditions; strive for high artistic standards; and respect
and develop participant's artistic perspectives.

Friends of Cain Park
Day Wednesday, May 21
It's Friends of Cain Park Day on Wednesday,
May 21, at the Whole Foods Market at Cedar
Center. Whole Foods is generously donating five
percent of that day's net sales to FOCP. At various times during the day, musicians
will be performing and visual artists will be conducting demonstrations; and
all day FOCP will have a table where you can become a member and learn more
about what the organization is and does, and how you benefit by becoming a
member. The reason most people join - other than supporting Cain Park,
one of the great reasons to live in this area - is to get the best seats for
Cain park shows. And May 21 is a good
time to join, because Cain Park tickets go on sale to Cleveland Heights
residents on Saturday, May 24, and then to everyone on Saturday, May 31.
For
more information about the Friends of Cain Park, call 791-5149 or
229-4516, or read here. |
