Emergent 2017

April 21-June 4, 2017

Heights Arts presents the second iteration of its well received exhibition, Emergent, which shines a light on artists who have recently graduated from area art programs. First presented in 2015, Emergent 2017 celebrates the strength of the northeast Ohio region as a training ground for the great artists of tomorrow.

Greg Donley, chair of the Heights Arts gallery committee, described the exhibition: “We take a little bit of a chance when we do this show, but it’s exciting. We first ask professors at area colleges and universities to suggest names of artists who graduated in the past few years who are doing interesting work right now; then our committee looks at those artist portfolios and comes up with a short list based on the quality of work we see using a kind of compiled rating system (and there’s a bit of back-and forth within the committee as people advocate for work they particularly like). Then we ask the artists if they would like to participate, and not necessarily to submit what we have already seen in their portfolios, but to bring in what they are working on right now, if that’s what most excites them–even if we have not seen those specific works yet. That way this show captures what these new talents are doing at this moment, with the paint barely dry.”
