Such Agreeable Friends: Recent works by Karen Sandstrom
May 10–June 23, 2019

Some of us prefer to live at the center of the Venn diagram where human and animal communications overlap. There, friendships thrive, stories unfold, heartaches slay us, and acts of beastly grace sustain us. We are drawn by the tension between what can and cannot be understood about them—especially, but not only, those with whom we share our lives. In sketchbooks and stand-alone works on paper, writer and illustrator Karen Sandstrom celebrates the mystery and belovedness of those whom George Eliot described as, “such agreeable friends.”

Karen Sandstrom earned a journalism degree at Bowling Green State University and her bachelor of fine arts degree in illustration at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where she is director of communications. She was a longtime writer and editor at the Plain Dealer in Cleveland. Her illustrations have been published there and by Boyds Mills Press, Crain’s Cleveland Business, and Edible Cleveland.
