Things That Fly

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAApril 21 – June 4, 2016

You could say that we humans have an obsession with flight, and a desire to fly. From the symbolic and spiritual roles of birds in many cultures’ belief systems, to Icarus and his waxed wings, Leonardo da Vinci’s human-powered ornithopter, and even the United States “space race,” there are countless examples of our fascination with being airborne in the history of art and science.

Things That Fly, opening with a public reception on Thursday, April 21, brings together seven Northeast Ohio artists whose works in a variety of media examine the concept of flight and our relationship with it; from literal interpretation to constructed environments, and even the reinvention of natural histories.

CO-SMITH_IED230x310Curated by founding Heights Arts board member Sharon Grossman, the exhibition showcases the work of Stephanie Craig, Maggie Denk-Leigh, Lori Kella, Peter Larson, Lynne Norwood Lofton, Lynn O’Brien and Christopher Owen Smith.

On view: mixed media, drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, and ceramic sculpture.
