January 22 – March 14, 2021

Our first spotlight exhibition of the new year features Helen Liggett.

Helen Liggett is an academic and photographer who teaches in the Architectural Studies Program at Kent State University.  She is the author of numerous articles and professional presentations, often incorporating urban photography.  She is author of Urban Encounters.  Recent projects include Design/ReBuild  (available through Amazon) and “City Built by Hand” (forthcoming through The American Roundtable), both as parts of projects initiated and sponsored by the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative.

“This is a quiet exhibit about making pots and clay sculpture– standing in counterpoint to “Posing the Question.”

It is based on a project begun several years ago when I was invited to photograph a group of women potters who had worked together for many years – first at Karamu House and then later at Bratenahl Community Center.

They worked  in an open space with layers of clay below and floating, flowing, rippling conversation above – fashioning worlds based firmly in experience and in the clay.

The hands of potters have an intimate relationship with their materials.  These hands and their work are such familiars that at some point the differences between them begin to blur.  Photography reveals this process, announcing truths both humble and profound.

This exhibit is honor of Marilyn Brooks, Ginger Kuper, Rae Epstein, and Bea Silverberg.  Special thanks to Nina McLellan for spurring me on with one of her very good ideas and to Sarah Clauge who generously welcomed me to her studio/class room space.  Thank you also to Folk-Legacy Records, Inc and Elmer Beal, Jr. for permission to use “Fashioned in the Clay” the title song in their album of the same name featuring Gorgon Bok, Ann Mayo Muir and Ed Trickett.”

View our Event page for more information of the exhibition opening on Friday, January 22, from 5-8pm.
