NO EXIT NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE

NO EXIT to perform a free gallery concert at Heights Arts

April 30th at 7pm

Program

No Exit is thrilled to back at Heights Arts where the ensemble will be joined by renowned cimbalom artist Chester Englander (https://www.chesterenglander.com) and violin virtuosa Mari Sato. This sonically enticing program will feature a trifecta of brand-new world premiere works. Among them will be Douglas Knehans’ Ecstatic Waves (for string quartet & cimbalom) and Hong-Da Chin’s …tears…yet far yet near (for cimbalom and ensemble). Both pieces seek to recontexualize this centuries-old folk instrument, bringing the cimbalom into the realm of avant-garde new music. Also receiving its world premiere is Edward Smaldone’s jazzy and immersive Duke Re-Dux (for mixed quartet). Rounding out the program are the otherworldly and visceral soundscapes of Per Nørgård’s monumental string quartet, Night Descending.

Since its inception, the idea behind No Exit has been to serve as an outlet for the commission and performance of contemporary avant-garde concert music. Now in their 13th season and with well over 240 commissions to date, they have strived to create exciting, meaningful and thought-provoking programs; always with the philosophy of bringing the concert hall to the community (not the other way around) and by presenting their programs in a manner which allows for their audience to really connect with the experience……… free and open to the public in every sense.

Over the years they’ve presented music which represents the gamut of the avant-garde: from the impish and mirthful jazz stylings of Raymond Scott to the cerebral hypercomplexity of Brian Ferneyhough (and just about everything in-between). No Exit has sought to give voice to those composers who they feel really have something to say, whether they be young composers at the beginning of their journey, established composers at the height of their abilities, or venturing into the past by exploring new ways of sharing the unconventional and innovative music of the early twentieth-century’s artistic vanguard, which has led to the commission of exciting contemporary re-imaginings of music by Erik Satie and Eric Dolphy, to name a few.

While No Exit has delighted in bringing what they do here in Cleveland to other locales (both national and international), their emphasis has always been on serving the community in Northeast Ohio. No Exit has formed many longstanding and fruitful partnerships with individuals and organizations in the Greater Cleveland area which has in turn, played an essential role in their success in bringing unique programming to audiences in Northeast Ohio. As in past years, they will continue their efforts to nurture the development of young composers and musicians from the area through workshops, student readings and master classes.
