Jules Ahern

My work is about decay, regrowth and my experience as a woman. I use shades of rust, blood and patina blue greens alongside visceral textures and surfaces to create an experience of revolting beauty. Found materials give my paintings from and to ask viewers to question consumption. Pink tool, rusty mesh and flower seeds sprout out of paint and canvas contrasting thin washes of paint.
The current work I make is driven by the desire to escape capitalism and attempt to understand the events that shaped me as a woman. I want to uncover the complexity of what femininity means to me and confront viewers with objects that feel alive or feel as if they had been alive. I have recently shifted from making large figurative paintings to smaller more textured emotional landscapes. Many new works have closely resembled the size of my torso
