Wes Cunningham
The world’s gone mad, and now cartoons are made physically manifest! My work features illustrated, anthropomorphic characters working in the fictional setting of Limulid Laboratories. These characters consist of the scientist Mr. Labs, the curious doglets, and a troublemaking fish. From bricks to hazard signs, and supercomputers to mysterious hallways, they investigate it all.
With these characters, I produce a variety of ceramic works, from functional to sculptural, that explore the interplay between the real versus the cartoon, the physical versus the digital, as well as the structured versus the spontaneous. Familiar situations, objects, and environments are twisted and exaggerated for humorous effect, with the intent to illuminate the mundane. Ceramic allows the cartoon world to collide head on with our own as users are encouraged to celebrate their physicality / non physicality through dishware that is funny, beautiful, and in the most wonderful way, banal.
