Kathleen Cerveny: 2013-14 Cleveland Heights Poet Laureate

Kathleen Cerveny, appointed by the city as Cleveland Heights, Ohio’s sixth Poet Laureate in April, 2013 is an artist, poet, grantmaker and arts advocate. Kathleen has been a working artist, educator, development officer and award-winning producer of arts programming for public radio station WCPN 90.3 FM. A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, she has exhibited her artwork nationally and now pursues poetry as her chosen means of creative expression.

Kathleen joined the Cleveland Foundation in 1991. As the Foundation’s Director of Arts Initiatives she has shaped the Foundation’s Arts and Culture programs, leading major initiatives in public policy, capacity building and organizational advancement for the arts over the past two decades. Current initiatives include Creative Fusion – a long-term community-based residency program for international artists, and Engaging the Future, a multi-year initiative for selected organizations focused on developing the next generation of arts audiences and patrons. In addition to leading the Foundation’s major arts initiatives, she is responsible for evaluating the impact of the Foundation’s grantmaking programs and for capturing and sharing learning from this work for the benefit of the Foundation and the community.
Kathleen is a member of Take Nine, a group of poets who write together and perform their poetry in venues throughout the region. She is currently pursuing her Masters’ degree in Poetry through the University of Southern Maine’s Stonecoast Creative Writing program.

Her work has been published in Amoskeag: the Journal of Southern New Hampshire University, by Luna Press, Pudding House Press, Shaking Like a Mountain and elsewhere. Kathleen is also one of Heights Arts’ past Haiku Death Match Champions.
