Spotlight: Olatunbosun Akinyelure

Olatunbosun Akinyelure is a Nigerian visual artist based in the United States whose work explores African identity, cultural memory, and the richness of everyday life through contemporary painting. With more than thirty years of artistic practice, he employs a diverse range of media and techniques to create expressive works that celebrate heritage, leadership, movement, resilience, and community. A distinctive feature of many of his paintings is the rich surface texture achieved through his extensive use of the palette knife, creating works whose physical presence rewards careful observation.
Raised in northern Nigeria, Akinyelure draws inspiration from the region’s cultural diversity and the lived experiences thatshaped his early artistic development. His work has been exhibited in
Abuja, Nigeria, Dubai, London, and the United States, reflecting an artistic journey that bridges continents while remaining firmly rooted in his Nigerian heritage. Through his paintings, he seeks to foster dialogue, preserve cultural memory, and celebrate our shared humanity.
