Emerged

The mission of Heights Arts is especially well represented by its biennial Emergent exhibition. In five editions starting in 2015, the Emergent show has featured exactly 50 artists for whom this exhibition was their first opportunity to reach a broad audience. Some artists have been “emergent” because they were young graduates just out of school, while others had followed their own pathways to the point where they were consistently producing a volume of solid work and beginning to seek exhibition opportunities. In discovering and exhibiting these emerging artists, Heights Arts has been able to introduce dozens of new artists to its audiences, providing a springboard to build their artistic careers, while delighting viewers with exciting new work.

Four artists previously featured in our Emergent exhibition series: Alyson Hollobaugh, Jacob Koestler, Saloni Parekh and Grace Summanen, return to reflect on their personal growth and development as artists over the years

Alyson Hollobaugh’s multidisciplinary practice spans jewelry, painting, and print, celebrating sensory experiences found in everyday life. Her work captures fleeting beauty—flowers, landscapes, and food—through joyful, tactile forms that engage the senses and stir quiet humor.

Jacob Koestler uses photography, film, and sound to document and reimagine Appalachian and Rust Belt landscapes. His layered works reflect the surreal beauty and contradictions of these regions, offering glimpses into hidden narratives and overlooked spaces.

Saloni Parekh draws from South Asian spiritual traditions, using painting, video, and sound to question and reinterpret the idea of god. Her work unravels the tensions between faith, identity, and societal division, creating room for new perspectives and deeper inquiry.

Grace Summanen transforms mundane materials—fabric, paint, and household objects—into sculptural and painted forms that challenge artistic boundaries. Her work reimagines the familiar, prompting viewers to reconsider the beauty and possibility within the ordinary.
